I' m on private land and I prefer screw in steps. Ladders are a little too bulky to carry out in the woods or move around if need be.

I love my ladder I think it' s made by winchester.Anyway It' s so much easier to use and it seems safer.I used to hate to move my stand with those screw in steps. It used to take along time to put up my stand now i can do it in 20 minutes.

I like the screw in steps. They are light and don' t take up much space. Unfortunately, they are slow. Plus the screw in steps are way more versatile. If you carry enough of them you can climb really high. I don' t use either very often now that I have my climber.

I prefer to use climbing sticks that strap to the tree.
Quick to put up and take down and they are light.

Screw in steps are illegal here in Oklahoma. I use a ladder.

If your going to use the lock in ladder steps the tree you use has to be very straight all the way up till you get to where you want to put your stand.I think the ladder limits you to where you can put your stand.Even if you use the sectioned ladder the tree can' t be too big or your straps won' t go all the way around it.Make sure the screw in steps are legal where you hunt.I weigh 230 lbs and use the screw in steps with no problems.MAKE SURE YOU SCREW THE STEPS IN ALL THE WAY!The steps should not bend when you put your weight on them.I bought the Ameristep Installer to help me get them in easier.
When I' m done using the stand,I take the steps out and chalk the holes as I' m taking them out. This keeps insects from getting in the tree.

Default Kriket,I hope this helps

I use the same type of chaulk you would use around your windows or around your tub to keep moisture out at home.It doesn' t matter if it' s white or clear. You can use anything that will harden in the hole your step just made.Glue, roof cement etc.You just don' t want to give insects an easy way into a tree.Certain insects can end up weakening or killing a tree.
