That is a smart idea. Cant hurt the tree any either.
I use ladders, mainly cause they are versitile, and easy to use. Plus I don' t want to be drilling holes into someone else' s tree.

I prefer to use climbing sticks that strap to the tree.
Quick to put up and take down and they are light.
Same here.

I use the tree steps but as with any of your equipment check the often I have had the break and always waatch if you are removing and then replacing them in the same holes sometimes they will pull out.

I used climbing sticks this past weekend and I could not get the rope to stay tight on the tree. I had lengthened the rope for bigger trees, and it would loosen up after climbing once or twice. I use my clomber 95% of the time. Those that like screw-ins, watch Walmart and Kmart after the season, you can get some really good deals. I bought all that Walmart had for $1 apiece(better than $2.50) and I got an unopened 50-pack from Kmart for $1.50. I found 9 detachable ones on ebay for $11. I only wish I could buy more of the lag screws with their custom head so I can put screw ins up high and the bottom 4 detachables in multiple locations. Anyone know where to get those custom lag screws?

I prefer the sectional ladder. I usually go up 16-20 feet, so I carry in 4 or 5 sections. They set up quite quickly. When I leave, I take my ladder and leave my hang on stand on the tree if I am going to come back again. It helps to prevent the theft of the stand. Most people don' t come into the woods with the means to steal a stand that high that doesn' t offer ready access.

I like tie on ladders - I made them with #3 re-bars. They are 3 feet long and have 3 steps each. I can easily carry 3-4 of them and they are MUCH easier to put on a tree and quicker than screw on steps and I like climbing with them better.

I used to use steps - until I made one set of these.... Now I have a couple of sets - enough to get me up to 20 feet high on 2 trees.....

Screw-in steps all the way for me!

I own a couple Summit climbers, and you can' t beat them for comfort.

But... when it comes to wanting to make sure I can hunt ANY spot I find, and not spend time hunting a tree, I take my little light strap-on and a bag full of steps. There' s been times I' ve climbed up into a multi-trunked tree, and my first four or five steps was in one section of the tree, and another two or three in another trunk, and the final ones in yet another section!

And -- take it from me or any other person with considerable experience with screw-in steps -- buy Cranford EZ start steps!!!!! If you even have to think of using one of those bulky Ameristep starter thingamajiggers, you ain' t using the right steps. I' ve heard horror stories of people even taking cordless drills hunting with them so they could drill a pilot hole to start their steps. If you use Cranford, you' ll NEVER use anything else.

Although I use my Lone Wolf climbing stand a lot, for my hang on stands I use screw in steps.......specifically Cranford Ezy climb. Although they cost more than most other screw ins, I would not trade one Cranford for a dozen Ameristeps! The safety and ease of use of the Cranfords are well worth the extra money!

I would not mind trying some Lone Wolf climbing sticks next year though.
