teen bowhunter with some questions
Hello fellow hunters im a 16 year old bowhunter i have taken 2 bucks in 2 years from a spot and stalk hunting situation near my house...now that being said..i have found a new honey hole were a large 140-150 class buck has decided to call home..i purchase a new climber so that i may be in there easier...but none of this matters my question is this...........?The season opens on october 4th in pennsylvania and the temperature is currently 46-54 degrees..is it logical to rattle and call for the deer in the current weather conditions...this is purly and opinion question any suggestions and/or advice will be welcome...next question because of the bucks dominant staure in the deer community in the area is it wise to try 2 use a territorial attractant while calling and rattling to the buck/bucks...any tips are welcome thankyou for taking the time to read this ...goodluck and happy hunting ..

Welcome yahny, If I were you I would just slip in there and get on one of his trails and keep quite. You' ll have much better success that way. Rattling, grunting, scents, etc all have there place, but for opening weekend I think I would keep quite and wait on the buck to make a mistake. Good luck.

Yep, same advice here. Opener is gonna be chilly here in PA, but, the rutting activity is nowhere near peaking yet.
I would say that your best bet is to just set up and stay quiet. If that doesn' t work or you would like to do some calling, get yourself the Primos " Lil Can" . It makes a regular doe bleat (not and estrus bleat), and it has worked well for me in early season. The buck is dominant, and if not, then, you better find the bigger one This will arouse his curiosity as those are " his" woods. He might just be provoked enough to come in and see what deer is there.
At the end of October, then you can start the grunting and rattling. That is also the best time for scents. If you make it to the last weekend of October, get some good doe in estrus urine. I really like Still Steamin Doe Urine. Also, you might want to get some Tinks Dominant Buck Urine, and some Still Steamin Buck Semen. Put these three products out (use a very very small amount of each, too many people over-do there scents). Get a " Primos Estrus Can" , a Tru-Talker grunt call, and some rattling horns. Then, just have at it. Pennsylvanias buck to doe ratio is alot better this year than last year. The competition for does is going to be more intense. I would say that you should start out with a few estrus bleats. Wait about 10 minutes, then do 2 or 3 grunts on your grunt tube. Follow that up with another estrus bleat and wait about 15-20 minutes. If nothing, then, do a grunt, estrus bleat, and then grunt. Then just start rattling.
I hope this helps and I hope to see you post a picture with that big boy this fall
