First Frost on Opening Morning...Suggestions
Weather forecast is calling for 30 degrees on opening morning due to a cold front heading our way. Weather has been warm and I' m wondering if the sudden frosty morning will keep the deer moving longer in the mornings. I have heard hunting tales of the big ones being seen on the first frosty mornings of the season.
I had planned on hunting only in the afternoon next week, mainly because I am afraid of spooking them out of their bedding area. Any suggestions...

The frost can get them moving more as most cool temps will.
It has no effect on buck hormones, but they will (with the cooler temps) be more active as the rut nears.

I shot and lost the nicest buck to date on the first frosty morning. The funny thing is I heard every little crunch in the woods from all the other deer and squirrels but not one sound from him. He came in from behind me and i did' t even know he was there until he lunged out into the tractor road 12 yards away. I didn' t get a clean shot until he was 22 yards quartering away where my spitfire didn' t penetrate and ended up wounding him. There is something about those mornings that keep me alert now. Good luck!!!!

Dress warm, and bring one extra coat than you think you will need. Even though I' m used to 150" snow/year and cold hunting seasons - those first few " frosty mornings" ALWAYS make me wish I' d dressed better - even when I KNEW BETTER.
