kinda confused
I am 15 years old and a week ago(opening day for archery in maine) i shot my first deer with a bow, a 125 lbs. doe. i hit the deer just too far back and paunched it,well after i made the shot i waited about 2 1/2 hours the deer bled for about 150-200 yrds when it stopped bleeding. we then followed what looked like a running deers tracks and then jumped it we finnally stalked it and shot it again. my first question is why the deer stopped bleeding and my next question is why the deer when we walked to it before we shot it again was just about dead but before it had enough energy to run away. the arrow did not pass through and broke off but a piece stayed in it. let me know what you think.

Congrats on the recovery of your deer. In answer to your questions. A few things came into play here, first deer are full of tallow and it will stop the best blood flow, 2. The arrow was also pluging the hole, 3. The stomach contents also help stop the flow of blood and finally you didn' t hit any major vein or artery to supply a steady blood trail. As for the deer running off, it is a wild animal and its lust for life is probably the greatest I' ve ever witnessed, that coupled with a burst of adrenalin and it was off.

I think Jerseyhunter answered your question about blood flow. Now, may I suggest you visit the top of the bowhunting forum and read " Recovery, What to do after the shot" ....there is a lot of great information there for the experienced and novice hunter alike. Since you gut shot that deer, waiting 2.5 hours wasn' t nearly enough as you know because you jumped that deer. You could just as easily jumpered her out of the county. I' m happy you were able to get another shot in her, that' s always a plus. Congrats on your doe.

Congrats on the recovery, but you did get lucky taking after it so soon. And as far as the deers will to live, you would not believe how strong it can be and how far and near death deer can go before it finally dies. Never underestimate a deer' s will to live.
