30-35 yards. Shoot for hair not air. If you setup one pin for 20 or 25 yards and practice out to 35 you will find your pin is still on target. It may be elevated a little more but you shouldn' t be aiming at air above it. Close up you should aim a little low but never under you target.

I have shot good groups out to 50 yards and have taken deer at 40 yards. My eyes are not what they used to be though, so my limit is now 30 yards.

I will only take a good vitals shot at under 40 yards....anything farther than that is UNETHICAL....
My cut off is 40 yards as well..... But my question is what makes 41 yards unethical and 39 acceptable?

If you estimate the animal at 38 yards before the shot and then walk it off after the shot and it is 42 yards, would you then consider yourself an unethical hunter? Just something I was thinking about.

Dead on at 40 yards. In the vitals at 50. I' d still seriously question any live shot over 30. It' s one thing to shoot an inanimate 3D target at 40 yards, quite another a living, breathing (beautiful) deer at 30+.

Good judgement-good luck!

For many, taking more than a 30 yard shot is unethical because of their ability....to a longbow shooter shooting 35 yards might be considered unethical....I' ve taken a buck, double lunged at 42 yards....without hesitation, and with the utmost confidence...I don' t consider it unethical...to many they never should try it but ability is in the individual.....the unethical shot is one a hunter knows he shouldn' t take because of his ability and simply hoping, not the longer shot of a realistic ability because I wasn' t hoping, I knew.
