proper arrow for first elk hunt
Would love some help or advise on a carbon vs AL question I have.
Shooting LEGACY at 67lb with muzzy zeroeffect.
Always used carbon and spitfire MECH. for my whitetail hunting and yet to have a clean pass through.
Have decided that I will use a heavier cut on contact broadhead like the four blade MUZZY 125 or 130. But I wasnt quite sure if I should switch my arrows fro Carbon to Aluminum.
LEaning that Way Would Appreciate any comments!!
THANKS

I wouldn' t use an arrow with your setup that was under 400 grains. You will probably get a variety of answers on the carbon vs Aluminum. I have shot elk with both. I prefer the carbon arrow for a number of reasons not the least of which is durability. Your hunting in rugged territory usually far from the masses. If you slip and your bow takes a pounding you won' t bend your arrows.
A four bladed muzzy will certainly do the job no doubt. However all things being equal under most circumstances a three blade will penetrate better than a four blade and a two blade will penetrate better than a three blade. Just something else to think about.
Good luck.

I agree with AE on making sure your arrow is heavy enough for good penetration. I shoot Aluminum, but just because of the fact that I always have and the price difference. I have had several pass throughs on elk shooting strong poundage(78lbs) and heavy arrows.

I shoot 60#, 25" DL, and 380 grn carbon arrow with 3 blade Muzzy. It wasn' t a pass through, but the arrow sticked out on the other side. It did broke a rib going in. It was a clean kill. Well, that' s my set up. Goodluck. I' m looking forward to my elk season on 9/8.

I would definately go with an arrow over 400 gr. be it aluminum or carbon.....Elk are tough critters.......I' ve killed all 5 of my bows with a muzzy 4-blade......great head!!!!!!
