RE: What yardage for broadhead practice??
Question for the Short Shooters. I practice out to 80 yards with my BHs. Why do some of the guys think that a 30 yard shot is the max that they may take? Is that because of your bows limitations? Is it because of the area that you hunt? If I' m accurate, confidant and my arrow delivers over 60 ft/lbs of KE out at 60 yards why wouldn' t I take the shot at a relaxed animal, standing broadside? I had a bud that sat in my stand one morning he had a broadside shot at an 11 pointer at 35 yards. He had only a 10 & 20 yard pin on his bow and missed what should have been a cake shot. His excuse was that he USUALLY only hunts deep thick woods. On our way home that afternoon he puchased a new sight with 5 pins and is now confidant to 40 yards. Why would you not prepare yourself for the animal of a lifetime?

I only go to 40 with my broadheads because I' m doing it in the back yard in a neighborhood. Most of the time I stay at 30 and under. I never think of an eight inch pie plate or anything like that. I think in terms of bullseye 10 ring. An eight inch circle is to big for my way of thinking.

I haven' t tested my broadheads yet on my new bow. I normally practice out to 65 yards or so and will probably practice with broadheads at the same ranges if they fly well enough. For a shot at a deer though, the limit is 40-45 yards with perfect conditions--a step forward by the deer could ruin a perfect shot.

Expecting to visually see the " aiming spot" and hold a pin exactly on the " spot" on a blended background -possibly shaded, and hit the kill zone at 60+ yards on an animal that may move the kill-zone in a split-second, is a questionable shot to the max.

An arrow should only be released at a deer with 100% confidence that it WILL strike where intended and kill the deer. There is no acceptable circumstance where you release an arrow and HOPE the results are good, not even for a large buck.

c903, I say 30 yds max because where I hunt, fairly thick areas, it' s very rare that I' d be presented a shot at over 30 yds. and even if I was, I' d be a little leary of takin a shot that far. IMO, 30 yds, is a long shot.
