The highs and lows of Opening Day
Well my day started off by me walking 1/2 mile back to where I wanted to hunt before realizing that sometime over the summer my climbing aid and stand base had somehow got seperated so I was stuck with huntin' from the ground. The morning hunt was uneventful. In the afternnoon I set up to hunt trails going to a big hay field as there's no mass where I'm hunting. About 3:00 I catch movement and see a doe coming my way. I come to full draw and she stops in what I thought was a clear shooting lane. I touched the trigger only to see my arrow deflect to hit her 4-5 inches back to far. I thought that I heard her crash so I'm thinking that the shot must've been better than I thought. I go down to where she was standing when I shot her and find my arrow completely covered in bright red blood so I took upo the trail onlt to jump her out of her bed about 50 yards from where I shot her, now I'm kicking myself in the butt because I know better. I backed out to leave her until morning. It rained all evening so I realize that this is going to be a tough recovery. Me my son and dad do back and start looking for her first thing yesterday and after 2 hours we find her in a creek bed about 100 yards from where I jumped her but the varmints had already found her and she was about half eaten. The only trhing good about it is that atleast I know that she's not still running around wounded.
