I have used baking soda for years and it workd great. I even gave my hunting buddies each a flip-top bottle filled with the soda [I hid them as Geocaches and made some fun out of the gifts.].

This year I' ll be using it in my boots and clothes. I plan to use a peice of camo cloth baking soda in it to dust my self off during the sweaty times.

Baking soda would work, but I just tie a piece of yarn from a tree branch and it tells me with even the smallest amount of wind which direction it is blowing.

According to Chuck Adams, it doesn' t matter if it smells. He says that if they can smell it, they have already smelled you.

well, I never thought I' d ever hear Chuck Adams make a statement like that!

while his statement is true, I' d never tell anyone to use talcome powder as a wind detector. I think it does matter if it smells. if you' ve taken all the precautions to be scent free, then what will a deer smell first. perfumed talcome powder, or a hunter that has showered in scent free soap, washed his clothes in scent free detergent, put them in a plastic bag with earth scent wafers, sprayed himself down with earth scent spray. granted, your still not goin to be totally scent free, but your not goin to smell like a perfume factory either.

I get talc (the actual rock) and crush it to powder....it' s actually very easy to crush (you can scrape it with your fingernail) and very natural.....

Also, FWIW, I think that controlling scent is important but I also firmly beleive that if they are downwind, THEY WILL SMELL YOU!!

I use baking soda, but I put it in a Tinks 69 gel bottle. It has a fiip top lid and if the baking soda absorbs any odor, it smells like Tinks.
