Mid-day hunt notes and a hard lesson
As some of you know, I have been gone hunting since Nov 5. Have hunted nearly all day every day except the couple days I came home to check into work, eat dinner with my family at my own table, and do some laundry.
From Nov 5-Nov10, we saw one to two shooters (125+) each day. But...every shooter was seen between 11:00 and 3:00. No shots (other than killing a couple does), but some good hunts.
Fast fwd to Nov 13. Sit from daylight until 11:00. Have to leave the woods so my cameraman can get somewhere, and bring in another cameraman at 2:45. Up stands a giant 8 pt not 20 yards from my stand! He never smelled or saw us, just heard us...so was able to sneak down and call him back to about 50 yards. It was a true giant 8, prolly 150 or more. While calling to that buck, another shooter came in right behind us and snorted at us from 20 yards before waving bye bye, lol. On a normal day, I would not have left that stand and would have at least had an encounter with that buck.
Yesterday, wind switched at 9:15, and before we could bail out, a shooter (135 now...gun season) coming at us at 200 yards winded us, but just walked off. Made a plan to let the wind finish switching and get back into another stand by 11:00. Cameraman got in the stand first, saw a shooter running a doe while I tied up the gun and scrambled up. Long story short, in the next 15 minutes, we saw too many bucks to count just running everywhere and shot one at 11:25. As we were doing the after shot talk, another shooter came into view but we didn't get the gun and camera switched fast enough. Saw several more bucks and does feeding thru also up until 12:30. Buck was at least 4.5 yr old, maybe 5.5.
Mid day hunts in November...gotta love them. Will be back at it tomorrow in IL for 3 days.
Good luck everyone that is still hunting.
