kansas whitetail down
i took a guy hunting this weekend that had a very unusual hunt. we had to use a boat and 1 mile of walking to get to the spot. when we got there someone had stolen the bottom half of our treestand so we were forced to improvise. i had mike sit on the ground next to an old abandonded 2 track road. mike had fallen asleep and 30 minutes passed when he heard something that woke him up. this buck had walked all the way down the road right infront of mike. the buck dropped his head down behind a small evergreen that was growing in the road. mike drew his bow but rustled some leaves when he drew. the deer heard the movement and walked right up to mike to see what he was. mike released his arrow into the bucks neck. mike was so close to the buck when he shot that the arrow stuck out the top of the bucks back. we tracked the buck for a half mile with a great blood trail, though the buck fell down a lot and each time he fell he would change dirrection making it challenging. we found the buck laying in the middle of some evergreens.
while mike was hunting that spot i took someone else to a number of different spots with a grunt/rattle and move strategy. we had multiple bucks charge in on a number of occasions, we had an absolute blast. the sent loc worked for all 3 of us that day as mikes deer was shot in his wind line without the deer catching his sent. john and i had a number of 110-140" bucks from 10 yards to 50 yards for extend periods of time that never lifted their noses.

Congrats. It looks like a dandy, although I hurt my neck trying to turn my head sideways and couldn't get a truly good look. LOL Sounds like a fun filled weekend hunt for sure. Herd some of those misc. extra little bucks towards NY would you?

That's crazy, but awesome that he had an encounter like that. The closest I've been to a deer was a buck. I was hunting on the ground because I used to be scared to hunt in a stand when I was younger. Well had a doe pop out in front of me and was about to shoot her and then she moved behind some trees, and then went off. I kept grunting and then saw a buck coming toward me. Well he walked right past me, and I never got a shot. I grunted at him and he walked right behind me about 2 feet from me. He smelled me and my blind and then walked off. It was a great encounter. Congrats to him for getting that nice buck!
