Default Could this be the lull?

Since summer i have had a tripod feeder going strong with corn, which is legal here in Ohio. It was getting torn up all year long by large groups of does and bachelor groups of bucks. Since the start of the season on Sep 27th all activity has ceased, except large numbers of coons. I admit that i did over hunt the spot a little for the first week of the season opener. I haven't hunted the spot in nearly 2 weeks and have still only got pictures of coons. This really puzzles me because i have hunted numerous times this season within 300 yards of this spot and am seeing a ton of action. I only became aware of the so called lull this week and am wondering if this has something to do with it. The corn in the area is being harvested and there are acorns literally everywhere on this property. The property is actually a tree farm and it is covered with large oaks. So basically my question is what kinds of food sources are they after during the lull?

If there is a bunch of other food for them I think they will hit it first. Once thats gone they will go back to your corn feeder.

BTW where near Cincinnati are you?

it's been proven by wildlife biologists there's no such thing as a lull. a lot of people think the deer just shut down and don't move as much, but they move just as much as they did before, just in different places. basically they've changed their feeding patterns. you gotta get out there and find em!good luck!

They will walk past corn to eat acorns, you're wasting money on corn, unless you want to coon hunt...

Yep. They'll walk right past a pile of corn to eat acorns. Seen 'em do it.

There was a post about this, just in the last few days. Like the others said....the "lull" IMO is when a lot of hunters have no idea where their herd is feeding.

i agree....gotta hunt the deer where they ARE...

between the over hunting, and hunting within 300yds of the corn(still hunting the same deer which if your being busted or they are finding your scent trail or winding you when your there without your knowledge etc) can and will change their habits...but the long and short of it is, they arent at the corn feeder...they are elsewhere...

you are seeing a ton of action in the oaks.....im seeing hard how you call seeing action a lull...lol....your seeing action...that should tell you there aint no stinky lull!! lol...

lots of guys believe the whole lull thing....but i beg to differ...bachelor groups are splitting up...mom is running off her button bucks...days are getting shorter...weather is changing...just gotta find the deer and hunt them where they are. some do believe that bucks "rest up" for the upcoming rutt....but i dont believe that much either...i think most guys dont see them now because the bachelor groups broke up and patterns changed and bucks are run out of areas they spent all summer in etc....deer gotta eat....and they eat alot....unless highly pressured, they are still feeding in the daytime...

The acorns arent here in Ohio this year due to the late frosts.

This spot i am talking about is a small 40 acre place that i have rights too. I also have two other farms that i hunt that are over 200 acres, this place is close to my house and i had planned on setting up the feeder to fill my doe tags up early. I had a feeder on this property last year as well and i would sit and watch them come in all day long from my stand. I am just a little baffled as to why they are not interested in it this year all of a sudden. The acorns were there a month ago and the deer were still tearing up the corn.

Below are a before the season and a week ago. Not one deer picture in 2 weeks.
