Anybody ever done the "Haul line hula"?
OK....so I have just a little time to hunt this morning. I go to the woodlot across the street that I hunted zero times, last year.....but shot a piebald there in '06.
I've got a conference call to make.....so I know I'll have to leave early. So...it gets time......and I undo my release and stow it (I use a target release).......un-nock my arrow.....and hook up my haul line. I just get it started going down when I see 'em. Whoopsy.
So here we come back up. Cool. I get the haul line unhooked.....nock an arrow.....get my release back out.....and wait. The doe and fawn play a game to see how many times they can make me spin around in my stand.....lol. They're directly behind me.....and every time I turn....they move to the opposite side. If the doe wasn't so big....I wouldn't be playing their game...but she's a hoss. So I play. After a few roundabouts....they walk straight away. So....I hook the bow back up....stow the release.....un-nock the arrow and put it in the quiver. I then lower the ow to the ground .....just in time for.....you guessed it.....MORE deer.
So up it comes....REAL fast. I don't have a lot of time, here....lol. Remarkably I didn't get busted....even though they're only 25yds away.
Long story shortER.....no shots fired....and I didn't get busted....UNTIL I got on the ground (by two of them).
What a funny morning. When you wanna see them they're ghosts. When you DON"T.....look out

Yeah I've had that happen several times. I had a slightly different "haul line hula" last week because I forgot my haul line. It works a lot better when it's attached to my climber instead of laying in the bed of my truck! [&:] Needless to say that was an interesting and slow climb!
Glad you had fun in the woods while the rest of us are working!!

Why do you think I had to come down, Rem?
I started doing something last year....
On morning hunts....I leave my haul line attached to the climber as I descend....."just in case".
On evening hunts.....once I un-nock that arrow...I'm done. I've already determined it's too dark for an ethical shot. So....to thwart any chance of me recanting....I unhook my haul line and toss it down before I descend.
Probably should have done that, this morning...lol.

Been there done that one Jeff.
I've got a good one for ya. My brother did this same exact thing bear hunting this year. Little did he know that the bear was still 10' from his stand when he hit the last peg before he stepped on the ground when It was pitch black. A big old woof woof came from a 300lb+ bear 10' from him that he had thought left. My brother damn near **** him self going back up the tree 100 mph!!

The first year I hunted out in the midwest I was in Nebraska with Frank.
Now Frank is exciteable to begin with so when I relayed my experience of a giant non-typical standing under my tree with my bow on the hoist rope before I had time to haul it up it put him over the edge.
The next morning he actually nocked an arrow THEN tied his bow to the hoist rope for fear the same thing would happen to him!!
And for the love of God wouldn't you know it, 3 bucks came in as soon as his feet hit the platform he pulled his bow up and actually shot the biggest of the 3 with the hoist rope still tied to his upper limb!
That experience has caused a permanent case of "haul line paranoia" at the very least for Frank.

I've done one even better....I crawled into my stand in '04 and rather than get my bow ready(arrow nocked and quiver off), I proceeded to get my camera and mount attached to the tree. After getting camera arm attached, I heard a noise and looked over my shoulder just in time to see a 170 class buck coming down the trail at 20yrds. Couldn't move as the doe he was following was right THERE. After they were gone, I could have puked!!!
Luckily...3 days later he came by another stand and I got him!!
I still use the camera, but my bow is always the 1st thing that is "ready"!!!
P.S. good story. I can visualize you up in that tree....
