RE: First day buck turns into first sleepless night
Why would you not shoot it in the hips?
Big muscles mean high blood loss. I can see not intentionally gut-shooting a deer just for the sake of getting another arrow into it, but I have no problem shooting for big muscles that will bleed like hinds or even the neck.
Would you rather lose a deer, or shoot it a second time through the hips (when it's the only shot you have)?
It's not like you'll ruin all that meat with an arrow like you could with a rifle.

Yea thats true. I dunno to be honest, just seemed....weird at first. No offense sir. I would of gladly put a 2nd arrow in the deer if it was possible BUT good ol mother nature kept a few trees between us. Thanks for the advice though sir

I agree, it does seem weird to intentionally aim for a non-vital area. But once a deer is hit the objective is to end it as quickly as possible AND to recover the deer.
Glad it all worked out on that buck.

About 500 yards after I jumped him, initally only about 20-30yards. Mainly thru a soy bean field...but it was tough blood till we figured he went thru the field.

Congrats on the buck and way to stick with it. That is such a sinking feeling when something like that happens, but you kept at it and found him. Good job.
