One branch away...

One branch away...
I had an encounter with one of the biggest typicals I've ever laid eyes on in the wild. Im hunting a new farm within half a mile from MSU campus, and have seen tons of deer the last 2.5 weeks but no shooters till this evenning. Sitting on the edge of Clarks river I was entertained the entire evenning by turkeys, waterfowl and the occasional doe and fawn. At 6:30 I heard a deer cross the ditch 30 yards behind and could not believe my eyes. A solid 160 class 10 point was walking broadside at 30 yards, trailed by two smaller 8 pointers. To give alittle background, I was hunting my buddies stand who is famous for not clearing shooting lanes. So back to the story, the trio of racks are still only 30 yards away but obscured by brush now working right to left of me. I have one hole to shoot through (assuming they stay on course) and its only 3-4 feet in diameter. As they approach the window I draw back, slide my facemask down and anchor. The lead buck (biggest) now picks up the pace just as he hits the window. I 'mah' at him and he picks up the pace to almost a run, and stops 5 yards past my shot. I decided I'd be perfectly happy to shoot either of the 8s (both 125-130 inchers) so I redirect my focus to them. At this point Im at full draw with all three deer standing like statues on full alert. One of the eights starts back-peddling to where they came, only coming 2-3 yards closer to my position. I look ahead and find another hole I can shoot through. He got to the hole, but a small branch hanging over his vitals made me have to crouch down. Just as I was beginning to creep the trigger he spotted me and bolted, along with the other two. Pretty heartbreaking, but atleast its still early in the game...
