I think you should be OK doing that. What are the chances of a thief having bolt cutters that far back and wanting to carry a stand out? If they get it, they will have earned it.
On another note, we use pack frames for carrying our gear on on 1 mile plus hikes in. It better balances the load and makes the walk in a lot easier. Something to consider for future reference.

I do it all the time. One HUGE tip: make sure that the padded seat/armrests are covered. If it rains on them, that thing will stay soaking wet for days. It'll even start getting moldy and smelly.
Nothing worse than climbing up the tree and sitting down, only to have your entire ass soak rightthrough the whitie tighties. That makes for a long, miserable day.
Keep the seat dry.
When I'm leaving mine out - I wrap the seat cushion in a garbage bag and bury it under a brushpile/logs.

I wasnt aware you were allowed to put a stand up in public land but i guess you can. hmmmm learn something new everyday..im too fat for a tree stand so thats why i never looked into it.

I leave a climber out almost every season, haven't had one taken yet.
You shouldn't leave it right where you want to hunt, someone may take advantage of the work you put in scouting.
