The xylum (middle of the tree) carries nutrient rich water up to the leaves. The phloem ("growth rings") carry ONLY nutrients back down to the roots to be stored in the winter.

hence the "" around dead....Biologically and ecologically speaking that part of the tree doesn't support new growth, ergo, "dead"
