RE: you only have one scouting trip what do you look for
first i would study topos and ariels of the area....once you learn to use those tools, scouting time on foot is rather easy...
then id go into areas that caught my attention(usually funnels and pinch points) and go in and see what it looks like....where the food is and where the bedding areas are....even then i can usually tell by ariels where likely bedding and hardwood areas are so im 1 step ahead...and knowing the likely prodiment wind of the area, it helps even more.....

That's where I live my friend..I've done this 3 times straight in 3 totally different spots and scored all three times.
a. I don't start scouting till I've walked 800 steps..then..
b. Look for oak trees, a small stream or marshy water in thickvegetation { wherea deer can stay hidden ,get waterand sun all day} once there look for deer trails with alot of tracks..droplings and some old or fresh rubs.}
c.It's been my experience the deer in highly pressured WMA stay put unless there is heavy pressure..I've hunted my same spots every year..the deer are still there.
