I am very aware of what a shed is and looks like....I' m not sure why the heck you are all focusing on the shed aspect anyway? I didn' t even mention it in any of my posts. Let' s just say the damn thing was ripped out of his frickin' head by a kamikaze crow...doesn' t matter.
As I said in my prior two posts, I am curious if you all think it is a misrepresentation, beings he killed the buck with one antler, then bought/traded for the other one.

If it is the exact antler that the deer grew that year and he was able to find it then good for him. I mean the deer did grow it and it was wearing it on his head. He just happend to shoot just after it had been shed. I would certainly want to have both sides of the antlers if I had shot it. IF, on the other hand, it wasn' t the correct shed and he had " fabricated" the mount then there would be a problem. Don' t be too hard on the guy the deer did grow the antler the same season it was shot. It' s just too bad that he won' t be able to have it officially scored.

I saw a very nice antler once that had a 1" piece of skull coming straight down from the base. I also saw a buck like Kdrpeirce states had one antler that was loose and you could move it around. Both those bucks were hit by cars.
But I know what you mean. If I were to shoot a great buck like that and it only had one antler, I would like to have the shed. But I would be honest with my friends about it.

Sure it' s a misrepresentation... but he shot the animal and I guess wants to put it back to it' s original form. Some people need to feel special I guess. He can' t put it in the record books or anything. They can Xray and see it' s glued or screwed back on.

True story. Two buddies of mine had a friendly wager on which was going to take a gobbler with the longest beard. First guy kills a nice bird with a 8 incher, two days later the second guy takes what appears to be a 19 lb jake with a 4" beard! He also produces several more inches of beard that he claims to have shot off of the turkey. Second guy claims victory, first guy calls bs on first guy and they ended up not hunting together anymore. Moral of this is.....it was a stupid thing to let come between hunting buds, don' t let it happen to you.

People in general, friends, co-workers, etc., are all going to have varying opinions on topics, even ones they are both passionate about. Hence this forum. I told him straight up, " to each his own....it' s just not something I would have done" .
I suppose my view is that I want to preserve that hunting memory the EXACT way it took place in the field. So if the buck I shot had one antler when I took him down, well that' s just an little extra something special when I tell the story or think back on the hunt. I think it would be kinda funny to tell that story of how you saw a monster rack on that buck, so you pulled yourself together to make the shot of a lifetime....then after you made the shot, the buck jumped and took off...problem being, half of his rack stayed in the tree behind him!
Just my two cents.

rook, for saying " to each his own" you seem to have a pretty big problem with it. I only say this because anytime someone goes on a tangent or doesn' t agree you seem to get agitated. If I were in the situation, I would most likely have tried to retrieve the other antler, especially if it was a buck that I had hunted for several years. I don' t know that I would get a normal shoulder mount, but I would probably mount the skull and put the other antler near where it would fit into the skull but an inch or so away, because it makes for a great story.
