When I"m in my tree, I range tree trunks at eye level with me. Doesn't seem to really make much of a difference though, but it makes me feel better.

NChawkeye makes the key point here, as I've come to realize after 20 years in this game, the toughest shots are often the closest ones. I like to get up around 18-20 feet in my tree if I can, and I really don't like to shoot at a deer inside 10 yards. I try to set up to fling arrows 20-30 yards.That's my killin' range.

At that range, my bow is sighted to drive the broadhead home if I misjudge by a yard or 2, steep angle or not.

Like this:

C being the distance from the stand the arrow must travel to a target
a= ground distance
b= height distance

c^2 = a^2 + b^2 ... formula to get the distance in a hypotenuse

SO.....

c^2 = 30^2 + 15^2
c^2= 900+ 225
1125= c^2
C=√1125

So your toal distance from 30 yards @ 15 ft high to target would be....

33.54 yrds

OK I happen to know badger girl is a school teacher and her calculation matched another archers deduction so why is yours so far off?

That formula (pythagorean theorum)is correct as far as themath goesBUT in archery there is 1 more calculation if you really want to get technical.Sight paralax and the arrows arch chagnes the actuall shot distance by a VERY SMALL margin.But,I am splitting hairs.[8D]

BUT,if you are in a stand on the side of a hill that is 40 feet high+ the stand height,then you might not want to shoot for what the rangfinder says,you will most likely miss.

So,it isn't bs,it is misrepresented at times and greatly misunderstood,but not bs.
Well said, my experience seems to be that I just know how to adjust instinctively, usually a couple inches low out to 20yds but have had to make a shot similiar to the example above where I had to aim waaay low on a steep angle at short distance. When you have to shoot straight down and parallax comes into play, that's when things can get tricky.

It is quite a bit more than that when under 15 yards.[8D]
