Mechanicals heads?

Mechanicals heads?
I’m not trying to bash anyone here or start a big dispute soif they work for than that's great. I’m just trying to understand why people put themselves through unnecessary troubles with mechanical broad heads. I keep reading the same song and dance over and over about them (especially the Rage heads lately) and I’m confused. Everyone wants their broad heads to fly like field points and if they don’t, they switch things up or head out to buy the newest gadget out. It really makes me wonder how hard it is for these people to just sight in the broad heads.
For me, I’m pretty darn lucky that my field points and fixed broad heads fly the same. However, they didn’t always and it only took a minor adjustment to my sight and I was all good. I sure wouldn’t go outbuy or try something that is constantly getting replies like below just to save a few seconds, cut corners orfollow the crowd.
“yes they do open quiteeasy ifthe blades get hitbut not "by themselves" just put the rubber band on right and you’ll have no problems with them” Or here’s one on shooting through blind mesh, “Unless you've got some dental floss tied around them in the center, yes. They will most definitely open going through the mesh. I'm honestly not sure I would trust them even w/ the floss”. Here are some other comments about it, “I'm getting some 2 blades, ever since the 3 blade recall". This one’s my favorite, “yeah, I use 2 blade one less blade to worry about so I couldn’t tell you about the 3 blade...the only thing I don't like about them are the have a tenacity to open by themselves, just by hitting a little tree or anything...but all I do is put rubber band for teethbraces on them and I can whack them against anything andproblem solved” and then, “Now I take them out of the quiver, make sure they are snapped in tight and then kill deer with them”
It seems to me that as a bow hunter I wouldn’t want to be out hunting worried about my equipment, how I can rig it to work right or if it they might be added to a “recall list”. I also don’t need go out hunting and have to keep remembering to double check my blades before I take a shot so that it work right. I’m sure that most will say that these broads are “devastating to deer” or “you can’t get a better blood trail than with a fixed heads” or “they pass through deer”. I say so what! If you do your part as an ethical and responsible hunter knowing where to place the arrow and then practicing it, the size of the hole shouldn’t matter. As far as pass through shots, I do it with my fixed broad heads a lot.
Again, If they work awesome for you that’s great! I wish you the best of luck every time you’re out in the woods and you have no need to reply. But for those that keep posting and asking wondering about them…………………………………..why would want to put yourself through all these issue with them?

RE: Mechanicals heads?
Honestly Tom,
That's a very good post. The one thing I can come up with and mind you, I have Snypers, Muzzy and several other fixed heads all coming together. My bow is tuned and matched tuned arrows, is the great cutting diameter IF a marginal hit happens. This is the real world, marginal hits can and do happen so I really accept no real answer to using a mechanical other than cutting diameter. IMO.

I have used the Rage for the last 2 years. I have had zero problems with them. I have killed 2 bucks, 6 does, one exotic, and several hogs in that time. My basic observation has been that as long as you are smarted then the broadhead then they work fine. (i.e. after you take them out of your quiver, make sure the blades are properly seated and you will not have problems).

RE: Mechanicals heads?
Rob is right about that. Marginal hits happen quite often, in fact, more so than not I would say. If the Rage are helping with that then Im fine with it, but I shoot fixed heads and I have to be pretty darn good not to make a marginal hit. I have killed 20 deer with the bow using fixed heads, two marginal hits but both were recovered. I have made 5 horrible shots on deer in 20 years of bowhunting, not even marginal, just plain sorry shots, those deer were not recovered. 5 deer were hit and did not deserve it. Those days are long ago now, most were done when I was younger and less experienced. The best thing I can say is to practice every week for the whole year whatever heads you shoot and it will help you make better shots.

RE: Mechanicals heads?
I'm with Rob in that my decision to use mechanicals has absolutely nothing to do with their flight characteristis and everything to do with their cutting diameter and the damage they inflict. They simply do more damage than the fixed blade heads I've used. I have consistently better blood trails and if I have to follow them they are shorter. These are not statements true of every mechanical against every fixed blade, just my observations that have lead me to use mechanicals.
Basically you could say I'm lazy and don't want to track the deer, just walk up to where I watched it fall over.

RE: Mechanicals heads?
I tried the rage because the Drury boys used them[:-]
I agree with ROB I can fire any BH out of my current bow, I want the one that is going to kill the deer the quickest
We have Mechanicals releases, why? Fingers work if one practices
Look at some ofour bows, rest, sights?
Bottom line KNOW your equipment

I don't know Rob if I am making his point or not. If snapping the blades down after taking them from the quiver is to much work then by all means stick with the fix blades. I just don't see it as that much trouble.

Maybe this is just me, but I shoot every day religously. Regardless if its 6 arrows or 36. true i could sight in my bow with my broadheads but as much as i shoot i cant afford to be sharpening blades or replacing them cause i was shooting them to much. I also shoot some 3-d with my hunting bow. I cant be readjusting my sight before a shoot and then readjusting it before i go hunt again. The mechanicals give you the ability to use your bow for the different situations with out having to readjust the sights between the use of field tips and BH's. Just my opinion and I could be wrong but thats how i view it.
