Great article in Quality Whitetails on Home Range
Instead of gussing they put collars on the deer and kept track. The did so in Farm country of SW Michigan
Average Home Range = 95% of there radio-telemetry locations
Core area =50% of there radio-telemetry locations
Average Home range does
123 to 494 acres
Largest does home range was equal to the smallest yearly bucks home range 1 sq mile
Resident yearly buck's home range was 1 to 2.9 sq miles
Home range must be large enough to enhance everyday survival and reproduction, yet be small enough for a deer to know the area.
Also goes to say deers core area in ag land is smaller than deer live in forest area. Deer hunting SLP deer in MI is way different than Northern MI and the UP.
I love being a member of QDMA, great infoo with the science to back it up!!!

That's awesome info ...... nothing on a mature buck, or are they included in there somewhere??

They also showed how the migration pattern of a doe was influence by hunting pressure. Where as in NLP and SP it is based on food and bedding.
The map of the core area for all the deer is within spitting distance of WATER.

Average dispersal distance was 6 mile, smallest 2 miles, largest 11.4
7 dispers during spring(Apr,May,Jun) 3 does 4 bucks the stated the spring dispersal is related to fawning
3 bucks dispers in October
This is the opposite of what they found in PA, being MI SLP had great deer density.
Fall was from low acorn production or high deer density.
