RE: Hunting tactics topic #1
I'm ordering it as we speak. I liked the trailer and description, I really don't need to see a bunch of hunts and kills(cough cough realtree cough cough), I need info and it looks good.
"There is no magic pixie dust.....it's about huntin 'em down and killin 'em."
That is part of the quote at the end of the trailer and that just about sums it up. Thanks for the tip.

About the best I can hope for is tucking up REAL close to a bedding area, hope the wind doesn’t swirl and the buck decides to move with enough daylight left to shoot. Other than that, I see no chance of catching a mature buck during daylight hours in the places I hunt. And this tactic is risky, because of the proximity I would need to invade to get close enough.
The bucks are well off their summer patterns by the time our opener hits, which honestly wouldn’t matter much anyways, cause even over the summer, you don’t see the big boys unless you have a spot light.

Now this might sound like a joke but it just might work: Get in there in the middle of the night and try not to leave any scent. Dreess just like you would to hunt. Take an alarm clock and spray it down to remove any scent it might have and set the alarm for, oh say 9 am. Get into your stand i on the bucks travel route into the bedding area at about 8am. At 9am you just might get a shot at that buck after the alarm gets him moving!

The DVD is filmed mostly on public land in marshes... No adds, no sponsors. Mainly ment for hard core bowhunters. Thanks "Peak" for mentioning and suggesting my DVD.

I am kind of with Germ on this one, I see alot of big mature bucks within the first few days of the opener and usually that dies off till around October 23-25th. Two years ago I had a nice 3-1/2 year old 8 point (would have scored in the high 120's) walk within 5 yards of my stand within the first hour and a half of shooting light on the first morning (damn limbs prevented a slam dunk shot). I can remember several years ago my buddy and I were set-up about 85 yards apart in a little funnel between some thick brush and a stand of pines. Around 9:45 a.m. on the first morning a big 9 point (looked to be a 3-1/2 year old) which would have scored in the mid 140's walked past him at 15 yards, buck fever set in and he missed.
Typically I see the buck sightings in general go down till that last week of October, and I have noticed that the last week of October has provided the most buck sightings in the years I have been hunting, even more than the remaining part of the season in November.

I hunted over 50 days last season. I wouldn't be out there if I didn't think I had a chance. It could happen at any moment. The deer are always there. All it takes is a dog to push one to you or a coyote or another hunter. Or a buck just going for a stroll.

Can heavily pressured mature bucks be killed outside the rut on a consistent basis? (Legally)
Can heavily pressured mature bucks be killed outside the rut on a consistent basis? (Legally)
Absolutely. All you need is five or six buddies and five or six walkers or beagles. Perfectly legal in my part of the country. Infact, back in college when I first started bow hunting I carried my compound bow on such a hunt (typical weapon is shotgun/buckshot) and climbed a tree down on a creek bottom and killed a nice big doe. I'm sure if you were in the right place at the right time one would come by you.
Infact, you don't even need to have dogs yourself... there are plenty running around rampant during the firearms season on their own or having trotted off from other hunts. They can't read Posted signs....
How much, if any, effort do you put forth at trying to do so? And what has been your best strategy?
Little to none. I don't want to fool with the dog hunters. I'll wave from the river on the way back to landing with a limit of ducks. I'll be the one in the war eagle with a big stupid smile and a scruffy looking red golden retreiver standing on the bow.

I have shot more mature bucks on opening day, than all the days of rut combined...
Is this at all due to the fact that Wis opens in Sept?
I have found that it is easier to get a shot at a mature buck before Oct. 1st rolls around which is when Ill, for example, opens.
Thanks

My favorite time formature bucks in day light, the end of Dec. through Jan. If you can find a good secluded food source, its money.I have found that if most of the guys on this site cant do it consistently, it justcant be done.NOW thats funny.
