I asked this same question of the guys on my "2008 Canadian Whitetails" threadon the "Other Area's" forum. I figured since most of the dark antlers that I've seen have come from Canadian bucks, I'dask the right guys. Most of them say it's from the trees the bucks are rubbing their antlers on. A couple said it was partially to dowith soil/nutrition.

I had a brief look at a beautiful chocolate 10 pointer last season here in Missouri.
Could be an old wives tale, but I remember hearing that the more nocturnal the buck was, the darker the horns.

he was about a 120" 8 point, he looked to be a 3.5 yo, wish i coulda got a shot!

This is the only chocolate rack buck I have ever shot. Not very big... just a young 6 point. couldn't believe how dark his rack is compared to others I have shot.
