Iteresting Idea. The cost isn't bad. 149 for the unit and 99 a year. Not bad but thier coverage looked pretty poor IMO. Of course I worked for the Iridium project (truly global satellite phones) I don't see to much detailed information about the frequency they use but that effects signal strength depending on the weather. Hopefully they took that into consideration.
Now if they combine this with Iridium they would have a winner. I bet Iridium isworking onsomething similar as well. I may need to give a couple friends a call that still work there.

The prices on the Iridium phones should be comming down too. So you may be able to have phone service for pretty cheap too. Now Iridium had messaging 10 years ago but they did not relay the GPS. However if you had both the Iridium Phone and pager you could be located with it.

Like I said I worked with this stuff for years so I'm glad to see some use come from it for reagular people.

Yes, I see it advertised, if it were a little cheaper (monthly fee) I'd consider using it since I spend so much time in the back country alone.
The fee only comes out to around $8 a month. It's about $106 annually with the extra $100,000 worth of GEOS. I plan to get on in the next few months. It is about $260 to buy the handset with the first year of activation. I just view it as another insurance policy.

I just found where this is through Globalstar. I know some people there too. Or used to be there. I think they were going under because Iridium is technologicaly superior. The coverage in AK alone makes me wonder. I'll have to refresh my memory on Globalstar's system. I know alot of my friends that worked there left because they were having finacial problems...but that was 5-6 years ago. Hopefully they are ok now.
