When I was growing up we had a couple fawns for pets, well for a while. Both times the mother was hit by a car. We kept them for a couple weeks then gave them to a wildlife rehab group. Pretty neat experience.

Pretty sure it is in SD as well... GFP claims that it's a saftey factor as deer (especially bucks during the fall/rut) can become 'unstable' due to hormon changes and such...

I have to believe that most states don't just hand out permits to keep wild animals to anyone that asks.

A woman not 3 miles from my house just got fined out the wazoo for raising wild deer, raccoons, you name it because she found them "abandoned".

Yep. The first step should be to call the Game Warden and ask if you can keep it. His answer will go something like this, "HELL NO!" After that, step 2 would be to release it or turn it over to someone that actually knows what they're doing.

Illegal and unjustified. Fawns can be purchased, not captured for pets.
