Well if you have both in the area, it could vary well be a hybrid.

It's not quite white enough for a pure Merriam but it's not really a pure Rio looking either.

Well Rob....now you got me thinkin....because i have heard of merriams "around" the area but i have no idea how close......but i know the majority is rios.

Anyway.....there nice birds!

ive seen pictures of both, that looked like one another etc....., look at a turkey map, what exists where you're located? both? I thought you tended to have one or the other, my turkey map of Oregon shows.....that its mostly rio's with some hybrids existing, so if that was oregon id say rio's.

My thoughts also! In some areas there are as many hybrids as pure strains.

Its a rio. Meriams have white tail feathers and easterns and oceolas have dark brown tail feathers. Wis Bow Hunter Those are easterns.

From what I can see of the primaries and the width of the buff band at the tip of the fan I'm going with Mirriam's. Where (what state/location) were they? Not that it matters a whole lot, I shot an eastern in ID where there weren't supposed to be any. It came in right alongside a Merriam's (which is what I was after) but being that it had 5 beards I went ahead and shot him. Apparently a few had been imported there years back but never really took.
