RE: How does hunting "spring Gobbler" go in the cold?
My very best hunts have been with a hard frost. Best one ever was 25 degrees, killed the 6th mature bird I called into range that morning, not to mention 11 jakes that all showed up together.
My partner filmed a guy in IL Sat morning below freezing temps. He bowkilled a nice bird, and his two buddies came back twice and even gobbled at them when after 40 minutes of hanging around they decided to mess with them and yelled at them to "git going". Keith said that was the most fired up and vocal birds he had ever seen.

I've been following a flock of 15 for a week. They've moved a mile away and seem happy. I might not beable to hear a bird opening day.

Not near as productive as being able to roam the whole state during the entire season, but hey I am sure it generates more revenue for the DNR so other State government can steal it as well.
We have to draw our permits season and area specific.

That's a problem in IL. As a lot of you know we have 5 seasons here, 5 days and slightly longer in duration. When you have 80-100 acres to hunt you may not even see a bird during your season.

Now that sucks for a turkey season. Heck, you could loose the season with a bad storm or something. I'd get out of state and hunt. Kentucky or something like that. LOL Roadtrip .... Roadtrip

In 2 weeks I'll be in MO. though
In MO. I can buy a tag over the counter and it's good for 2 birds statewide.

RE: How does hunting "spring Gobbler" go in the cold?
One year when I was still living in Maryland, I came up for a wedding the week before turkey season. It was down right hot in a church with no air conditioning. I left on Sunday for Maryland and came back up on Friday. I forgot my long johns and my sleeping bag. It was cold and getting colder. When we woke up it was snowing sideways and 17 degrees. My buddy shot a bird at 8AM gobbling his head off looking for a mate.
