Hole in Horn

Hole in Horn
Ok, question for everyone. Last season I killed an eight pointer that had a hole on the bottom side of the left mainbeam. I have heard that it is from bugs getting into the beam before it fully hardens, is that true? I have never seen a deer in my parts that had this but I know it is common in Ohio and have seen it in Missouri around West Plains area. Anybody got more information on this?

RE: Hole in Horn
Usually from a certain type of fly that either leaves and infected bite and/or lays eggs in the soft fleshy velvet of an antler. Even a thorn or cut in the right stage of antler growth can produce such phenomena.
