I have definitely been through some of those stages, but really don't fit into any of them at the present. I am all about the Fun!! Enjoying the hunt, the view, as well as the kill.

I may want to Stack a few does one week, but the next 2, 3, or 4 weeks I may do some serious trophy hunting. If I can't have fun then I would find something else to do. If hunting became like a job to me, then it probably wouldn't be as Fun.

I know guys that totally stress out over things during Bow Season. Not Me!!

I believe I am 3 and 4, but mostly 3 because I'm truly focused on taking a record book buck. I'd like to become solidified into stage 4 beacuse when I think of "method stage" I think of rattling, decoying, scents, spot and stalk, etc. Any other method to take a deer other than your traditional still hunting. 5 is a goal.

Which brings me to my next point. GMMAT and magicman, why not view these as dreams or goals? If you are in stage , why not shoot for stage 4 (as I am doing) to better your woodsmanship and hunting abilities. Just a thought.
Why would I view them as dreams or goals if I fit the description of that stage? You yourself said you fit 2 different stages so why rail on me because I feel that I fit 3-4-5. For your info, I trophy hunt for the personal challenge. Not to impress anyone else. I am constantly trying to learn more about deer. I am a conservationist and I am always willing to help new people get involved. As I said in my original post, I don't agree with the breaking down of hunting into these 5 catagories. Am I to give up hunting mature deer in order to move from 3 to 4? I don't believe so. Can I hunt mature deer and still help young people get involved? YES!
I believe you should do your research before lecturing me.
Haha, easy buddy, I wasn't "railing" (not familiar with that vernacular) or lecturing you I was just throwing something out there to think about, like I said: "Just a thought." You're right, I feel as if I feel I am in two. I am a solid three and like I said am striving and improving towards 4 and 5 which makes them a goal for me. I agree with everything you said. Passing on mature deer to progress from stage 3 to 4 doesnt do the hunter an injustice nor does being a stage 5 mean you cant attempt to harvets mature deer all together. I'm not sure what research I should have done before I decided to lecture you, but I think you misinterpreted my post, I was not trying to lecture you or "rail" you at all. I am never satsifed, I'm just a driven individual when it comes to deer hunting. I am a trophy hunter and hunt for the ultimate trophy (and that too is very personal, situational, and subject to change). Reaching stage 5 doesnt mean you are at the end of your hunting career, and considering yourself a stage 4 doesnt mean you should no longer take trophy deer. But, I view them as goals and dreams because I am always looking to improve. Again, just a thought.

Let's see how far off track we've gotten.LOL We have a guy that feels there are 5 stages of a hunter. His opinion you understand. So the question was... how do you fit into his categorys. Hmmmm. And now people think we're asking them to grade themselves. LOL I love this place.Nyuck Nyuck Nyuck.

None of this guys stages are really meant to lead to the next I don't think. For example, I skipped class 3, trophy hunting. I replaced it with "Having fun". In fact, I think all 5 stages should be

Phase 1. Have fun
Phase 2. Have fun
Phase 3. Have fun
Phase 4. Have fun
Phase 5. Keep on having fun.

All 5 phases can be personnally tailored to meet your understanding of having fun. There is NO WRONG way to do it.... as long as you have fun. If you want to say you personnally have to shoot big bucks to have fun... well have at it. If you say you need some meat to have fun.... well have at it. If you say you really enjoy teaching hunter safety and killing something once in a while... well have at it. If you say Harvest instead of KILL, well hell, you aren't having fun in my world... lighten up.LOL
A newbie, rookie, wannabee, trophy hunter, meat hunter can all sure have fun if you let yourself. You don't have to measure up to MY world or Germs world or GMMATs world, just do it. Enjoy the journey where ever it leads you. Enjoy the journey and all the friends that pass through your world. Time moves on and so do we and friends. I'm having a major "Miss ya' buddy" going on right now. I just talked to Len. We sure did have some good times in our short time together. I'm sure we'll have some more down the line, but I've moved and things change. I'm glad I enjoyed our times when we had them. The deer are long forgotten..well almost, but the times endure all time. There simply is no level or plateau that is "Better" than another. I refuse to say I'm better at having fun than anyone. I refuse to have people tell me I have to "DO THIS" to be worthy. It's a sport, a passion, a livelyhood or maybe just an outing. I don't have to do it your way to be worthy of anything. You don't have to do it my way to be worthy and have fun. Ya'll ENJOY".
