Maybe the deer are really short.
Like me being a stout 5' 5" standing next to SHAQ.
Now, no short jokes, OK!

Newmarket is north of Toronto. To him "up north" may not bee that far. It looks like a lot of lake effect snow and powdery.

Up here after a fresh couple feet of snow(powdery stuff) it's not unusal to see deer dragging their bellies in the snow or standing shoulder deep. The snow quickly settles. Get a little warm spell and then a cold snap and they'll be walking on top of it. In the spring you can go into some of these deer yards and see a browse line 12 or15 feet off the ground. Usually with smaller snows they get packed enough that deer don't get mired so deep. Compacting, freezing and all that helps. Take us this year, we've had over 100 inches of snow but I doubt there was ever more than 3 or 4 feet on the level. My brother had over 150 inches. Their snow pack was a little more. This is probably one of those 3 foot powder snows in a 24 hour period or something. Even when it's cold wind knocks snow levels down. Like my brother says, we got snow that's two years old. LOL
