I thought when deer came in to my feeder they were after the corn. Now I find out they were after the birds that were after the corn! No, really, I did know about the deer eating birds thing. I don't remember where I read it. Thats the 1st i've heard of the velvet thing though. Very interesting!

Several years ago I was bow hunting on and Indian Reservation in Nebraska because it opened in August.(I wanted a good buck in velvet for the wall.) One evening I watched a 140 class 10 pt. rub his velvet off in a plumb thicket and eat the tatters as they hung off the branches. The whole process probably took close to an hour. The last morning I killed a buck and his antlers were still pink and bloody. He had just rubbed off most of his velvet that night. Right after shooting him a 150 class 10 point that was still in full velvet walked up to 10 yards and stood broadside for several minutes and I had to let him go. I still havent killed a deer in velvet and may never get another chance. The reservation started selling way too many licenses and the hunting went down hill to the point that I quit going.

I knew that deer ate their velvet. I saw a picture of it somewhere a while back.

What I learned today is that GregH doesn't leave his pull rope hanging from his stand. Guess what will be pulled up and put away next year.
