I believe you are referring to this picture.That is a basically just a blinder so you don't use the wrong eye to aim with.Some people use these because they are are cross eye dominant or are shooting with the wrong eye and to make sure they use the correct eye,they use the blinder.
It is preferred over closing an eye because when you close an eye,there is tension in the face and it is harder to relax for the shot.There are also some people that can't close an eye and they will use this as well.
There could be more reasons but these are the most common.

Jamie uses his "blinder" for a few different reasons. It helps you aim and concentrate a little better, or so they say . Adam (Hayden) also uses one. Adam and Jamie are both pretty good friends, so I think there's a slight connection . Jamie's is actually like a sunglass lense. Adam's is more of a blinder.
