curious and bored also...
How many of you have killed a good buck the first time in a new stand? I have killed 4 good bucks the first time in. 3 of them I actually was scouting with bow and stand on my back, found great sign and threw up my stand, and within 1 hr or 1.5 had a buck down. Is this pure luck or attention to detail, or both??

I've killed 5 bucks with the bow.
In 4 instances.....it was the first time I was in that tree. Granted.....I'd been "close" to that tree (in the case of two of them), before.....but not in that particular tree.

Same for me. I started using a climber this year and would sneak in find good sign and set up. I also used a sattilite map from the DNR web sight and found the spots I was missing for so long. with this combo I saw more deer and better yet, more bucks. First time stands were WAY MORE productive than old one's.

As far as was it attention to detail or luck, I would say in my case it was attention to detail. At the end of last year one area looked like a bunch of crazed beavers had gone thru. You couldn't walk 15 yards without seeing a rub. The other set up was about75 yards from where I'd seen a10 pt.a couple years before.

I recently realised that three of the last four came from stands that were new as of that year. I think I learned a very valuable lesson. It is a very rair stand were deer will not eventually become alert to the hunter no matter how carefull they are and being mobile is a huge plus.

Your 1st few sittings normally are always going to be your best ones! I've seen more P@Y bucks in the first 3 sittings by far then I have in a stand where I had sat numerous times. I've never shot a big one on the 1st sitting, reason being I've passed up on allot of 120" to 130" bucks that were either to young or that I knew I had bigger bucks in the woods. I shot my big one this year on the 3rd sitting. I'm always excited the first few times I hunt a new spot.
