MY definition of a poacher.

One who attempts or does take an animal (game or non-game animal) during: a closed season; on property without permission; during illegal times (a.k.a. at night); with the incorrect weapon for said season; takes more of a particular game than the game laws allow.

So...are we saying that taking an extra buck....hunting out of season....etc....is the equivalent of speeding? What would it take for some of you guys to turn someone in (for poaching or OTHER offenses)?

That's what they were telling me . Personally I don't think anyone needs to poach anytime to feed his family but it sure makes for a fine justification for some folks.

Well I can afford to feed my family by going to the grocery store, but if I CHOOSE to kill deer, turkey, etc out of season and feed them to my family am I ok then??

Poaching is a crime........ just look in any DNR game laws book.
In New York State, the word does not appear anywhere in the game laws and though I'm not positive I don't think it does in any other law either. If you are arrested or ticketed for some violation it will never be for "poaching". The specific violation will be called out.
The word poaching is synonymous with violation or illegal. I don't care how you word it, it's a crime.

But thanks for the lesson.

No, no, you are confused. It has to be a need to be a justified poach. Like, if it is raining really hard and your family is hungry but doesn't want hotdogs and you need red meat and there is a big fat doe in your backyard. THEN poaching is OK.
