Default I dont understand

Yesterday I made a post asking if you all thought a deer would die with only 4" of arrow penetration in the ham area. (had to of hit the hip bone). I got 3 responces, (and one of those ws me), and More than 40 hits. I thought I would get alot more responces than that. I dont know, maybe I am just whining. Thanks anyways.

What was the title, I didn't even see it?

4" in the hams....only if it hit that femoral artery. If so it should have bled out pretty quick. How much more is there to the story?

If you didn't hit that artery, it won't die , unless it get infected and dies weeks later.

Darren - I saw it, just didn't want to be the harbinger of bad news. Unless you hit the femoral artery, or the wound becomes gangrenous, I'd say you're looking at a deer that will survive without a problem.

The bad news is that it didn't sound like a lethal hit. The good news is that: A.) You still have a buck tag; and B.) He'll be back next year with some serious headgear.

I killed a buck a couple years ago that appeared to have been shot through both hams witha bullet afew weeks earlier during the rifle season.

He seemed to be healed up just fine and was getting around with no problems. I had no idea of the injury until looking him over after I had killed him andnoticed the scars on the inside of both hams.

Thanks guys, to be honest with you, I really dont kow what went wrong with the shot. It was a slam dunk shot. 15 yards exactly, broadside. It sounded like I hit a branch, but I didnt see any that I could have hit. I wll be shooting my bow today at lunch time with all of my stuff on, to see if there is something wrong there. I really have a problem with buck fever, and noticiing what happens right at the shot.[:'(] I really need to ge over that. I waited 1 hour, and then got down to get my arrow. It broke the muzzy right off at the threads where it screws into the arrow. It went in a total of 4". It had to of hit the hip bone, for the Muzzy to break off like that.? Very little blood on the arrow. I walked the trail for about 50 yards, and found NO blood at all. I was thinking the same thing, that if I didnt hit the femoral artery, he should live and be fine. I just needed somebody else to tell me that.

I'd look a heck of a lot more than 50 yards. A buck hit like that could go several hundred yards and lay down and die. You might pick up blood 50 more yards up the exit route. It's certainly worth a hard look.

I looked for more than just the 50 yards. When I didnt find any blood in the first 50 yards, I grid searched, checked the river, and all of the other water sources... and I am not done yet. I will keep looking until I have covered the whole area, no matter how long it takes.

It's difficult to think that a deer that's been shot could live. It's a mental thing......The deer has been SHOT for cryin out loud, it's got to die....That's what goes on in our heads anyway.....

The truth of it is, not every shot is fatal. It happens every year. Deer are shot w/ arrows and bullets and it just doesn't kill them. Yes, I know they don't have the advantage of trauma centers, but not every human that's shot dies either...

As far as why you didn't get many responses, who knows. If you had 40 hits and only 3 responses, I would say that's right on. Look at the threads with hundreds of hits, and less than 10 responses....maybe there just wasn't much to say, I dunno.....Sorry you didn't get the validation you needed though. I say keep looking, but I also say he's gonna be just fine.
