Liver shot,

Who long do you let them lay before tracking? What is the rule?

I would agree with above. Only liver, I would wait until the next morning. You dont want to bump one.

Just for info my cousin nailed a deer in the liver and it died in 30 seconds and went 40 yards

Whatever you do DONT BUMP HIM.. I did one year and it took me two days to find him.. Pretty much just by chance, I looked by water, along side a creek and he was there DEAD!

There is NO WAY a deer dies in 30 seconds if shot ONLY in the LIVER.. Thats not physically possible.. They won't bleed out fast enough..

He got more than just liver IMO. 4 hours is minimum....I just recently read an article by Bill Winke who stated the same thing. A gun shot liver hit deer can be tracked almost immediately but he recommended 2 hours, a broadhead hit liver, 4 hours.

The point of the Recovery thread mentions, if you don't see or hear the animal go down, WAIT the appropriate amount of time. You'll lose more animals than you'll recover by not waiting.
