Under Armour Cold Armour vs. Poly Propolyne
I have never used anything but regular cotton thermals. Is there a big difference between the UA stuff and the much cheaper Poly Prothermals. I hate to spend $110 for a UA set when the Poly Pros are only $25.

TO tell you the truth, I have used both now (just recently on the under armour). And I like how the underarmor will keep you completely dry against your skin. Polypro is is warmer then the underarmor however, you can develope little "pockets" of sweat where it is not against your skin.

I have Under Armor cold gear and it does seem to work well...I also have the cheaper poly pro stuff, the only difference I have noticed is the UA seems to be better at keeping me warm after I have worked up a sweat walking to my stand...It is nice and thin and doesnt take up much space when layering, It is nice stuff but i think its overpriced....

I have used the Medallist Silvermax long underwear for the last couple of years. I paid $22 a piece for the shirt and bottoms. It might be a little light for what you want. XScent makes a heavier one with the same technology, for a little more (around $30 per piece I think at BPS).

If you can find the Army issue Poly Pro (like at a surplus store) that is in my opinion the best cold weather gear you can buy. I have tried the store bought poly pro and it doesn't seem to be as good as the military issue.

I have not tried it, but my friend swears by UA. He is skinny as a rail (not meat on the bone) and tends to chill easily. He loves the stuff and wears it to work outside all the time. I, personally, find it hard to overcome the price.

I was an avid skier as a kid. I used to layer up with dozens of cotton under-stuff, like the kid from 'A Christmas Story' and was always freezing cold adn soaking wet. Now I just put on one or two layers of the UA or equivalent type stuff and am warm and dry. These shirts all go on sale over the summer, so I stock up then. Don't think I've ever bought UA, but they are definitely worth getting.
Another time a bunch of us guys went white-water rafting. There was only one guy who had gone before, and he warned us about cotton under-stuff, saying do NOT wear cotton. I listened to him, fortunately, and picked up some of this UA-type stuff, as did all but one other guy on the trip. The knucklehead who wore cotton was literally blue in the face cold, while the rest of us were warm.
I don't know about spending $50 on one UA shirt, but find a cheaper equivalent and buy it.
