tips on knife sharpening
This is probably a dumb question to most but how do I get a good edge on my knife? I have a kit where you clamp the blade in and it has brackets on either side to guide the stone for consistent angle. Right now I start the stone at the handle and run it down the blade running off the tip. It sharpens it but I can't get to the point ofshaving hair and it seems to dull pretty quick.

Work the tip area a little more. Bring that part of the edge to the same degree of sharpness as the rest of the blade, then move on to the finer stones. As for dulling quickly, you've probably got the bevel angle too thin and shallow for the steel your knife is made from. Establish the main bevel with your courser stones, then raise to the next steepest angle on your guide and switch over to fine stones to polish the cutting edge.
Be patient and work it in slowly. Remember to use lighter pressure the closer you get to finished. If the knife has decent steel, you can get it to an edge where the hair will almost jump off your arm when the blade gets close to it.
