Default Cover Scent Question

Gentlemen,

I have been using fresh earth and cedar cover scent wafers by Hunter's Specialties, I climb high in my trees, and am still as a grave, but I keep getting busted. The past 4 times I have gone out I can hearthem coming through the leaves only to get hung up about 60 - 80 yards away. I can hear them sniffing - they don't blow - they just sniff and keep their distance. The only thing I can think of is that the cover scents I am using are giving me away. I just started using these things this year. I wash my clothes in scent killer detergents and use scent killer sprays before I go out. This year I have been hangingone waferon my climber andIpin one to my hat. Am I using these incorrectly? By the way, the scents, cedar and fresh earth, are naturalto the area. I hunt in hardwoods that border a ceder thicket and I believe the fresh earth scent is pretty neutral anywhere you go...on earth. Any advice you guys have on cover scents is much appreciated.

Which way is the wind going..? Into those deers faces? And are they busting your trail to your stand? Watch your walk in trail.

Crowkilla,

I've posted on this before. I had the same results with "earth scent" wafers. One day I got to thinking
that if I could easily smell a scent wafer hanging from the branch next to me than it is putting off a lot
of scent that the deer are going to pick up on. The deer have incredible noses - they may be able to pick
up on the fact that the "earth scent" or "cedar" is not a smell they are used to or is just too strong,
or "not quite right." The "earth" doesn't smell the same everywhere.

I would quit using them, especially based on your results. Go with a scent eliminator spray and
see what happens.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll leave these things in the truck this weekend. I appreciate the advice.

I don't hang the earth wafers around me. The ONLY wafers I have ever hung were the Doe Estrus wafers and they got me my 10-point buck 4 seasons ago.

As for scent control, I use the wafers in my clothes box. That way when I pull my clothes out, they already smell like the earth scent without spraying anything on them. I also don't wear rubber boots. I just shower in scent elim soap, take my clothes out of my bin.. and once I get to my parking spot, I spray down with either Fall Blend or Earth scent from HS. Spray the clothes, my hands, hair and then my Rocky boots. I have yet to have a deer wind me and the last two times I have been out, the does I watched walked directly up the trail I can in on without any alerting. So I would think about ditching the wafers in the woods and try some alternative methods to scent elimination. I'm sure everyone has their own little things they do before and while in the woods.

Right on. If they can smell your cover scent they sure as heck can smell you. Try to be scent free and play the wind.

I agree. I gave up on the cover sents when i watched a doe sniff the exact spot that i stoped to sprayed it on and took off. Now i jsut get as sent free as i can with sent free soap and deoderant and hunt the wind.
