I'll add that this area backs up to a farm that's hunted HARD. They might "push" a few my way.....and the deer "might" seek refuge here, at times.

I won't be real picky on a buck in this area.....so my standards might have just dropped a bit. 8 points....or something unique.....and I'm shooting, here (unless he's really juvenille).

This area is only 1/2 mile+ from my core area.......but I still think the bucks that enter my core are "somewhat" "travelers". I hardly EVER see one until the rut. The first deer I saw (after the one I saw 9/12) that I would take, now (in that area) was first sighted the day before Rob and I hunted together here, last season (which was aroud 11/16).

Like I said.....at least I have another option, now.

Kind of doing the same thing tonight myself. Going to a new property, only set foot on it one time so I'm not really sure what to expect, b ut my tree tongiht is more of an observation post to then make my move to kill one. Should be interesting. Good luck at your spot Jeff, always exciting at a new spot, but a certain anxiety too wondering what will happen.

It might take me a few hunts to get on them.....but I think this spot MAY produce.
It sems when im hunting a new area i really like to set up in a tree where i can watch deer movement and then pinpoint where there moving and move in on them. The scouting time is very valuable
This is very good advice

I will often make my first set in a new area 100 yds+ from where I think I need to be - If I have the time.

Here's another view of where I'm hunting. I've never hunted (plan) North of the road you see on both photos (which is the road I live on).

Looks like you picked a good spot. That field(oops I see that's a dry retention pond), east, should narrow North/South movement to the area of woods you hung the stand. Even if they use the field you should be able to see into it from your location. Depending on how old those pines are my guess is the bucks will be traveling in them (if young thick pines) or on the edge where they meet the hardwoods (if mature pines). Mature pines on the edge of oaks are great scrape locations because they have high visibility but the bucks will be moving through them quickly. If they have holly trees underneath I find deer tend to favor those for scrapes and browsing come winter.
