Role of hunters?

Before hunters were introduced.....lets just say the area west of the mississippi prior to the gold rush.

What do you think the herd dynamics were like? Were they "healthy"?

I think I was misunderstood in another thread. I KNOW our role plays a large part in the management of these animals.....but....left un-checked by us....they would survive just fine (over time).
At that time, domestic animals were pretty much non-existant west of the Mississippi. With the introduction of domestic animals in large numbers, we also brought in diseases to the wildlife in large numbers and brought in landfills and other trash and disease carrying aspects of our society to these locations. Can they co-exist, absolutely. Can the herds be near as healthy without hunting as they were in history....doubtful.
