Since you have a lot of time on your hands and a lot of deer to take don't shoot another one until everything is absolutely perfect. Close shot, broad side. This will get your confidence back.
Don't sweat it. ****aki happens.

Anyone that has been hunting for any amount of time has more than likely wounded a deer or other animal. Seriously like it was said before, they are absolutely amazing and I would definately not be suprised if that deer is still alive and well. It happens everyday, what every hunter should strive for is to minimize the number of times this happens. We owe it to the animals and to ourselves in order to mature as an individual.

A hunter can only control a certain portion of the total equation. The deer and other types ofvariables control the other portion. All I can say is learn from the experience.
Trust me, most hunters do become humbled at some point. IknowI have.
As far as this particular deer, unless it is bleedling internally (which I doubt), you probably just grazed it.
You mentioned that you didn't even think you hit it, so I am assuming that the deer wondered off normally, didn't look wounded. Also you didn't hear the arrow contact bone. Did you find any hair at the POI?

Sorry to hear about your rough week Jeff. I give you a ton of credit to come on here and tell us about it. You are a very well repsected memeber here, if for no other reason than your honesty. Just like you sig says! I too think that this deer is still up and around, and you may even get another crack at her. Unfortunately this is one of the perils of bowhunting, there are no guarantees on what that animal is going to do when that arrow is released. IF it were that easy, everyone would do it. There is no question you will learn from this experience, but it sounds like you did everything right with the tracking effort and your arrow inspection sounds like a backstrap hit to me as well, probably just below the skin. Get back on that horse and continue your season goal.

SOUND advice, stat. Heeded.
I want to thank you guys for the encouragement and understanding. You ARE my brothers in this.
I practice 12 moths a year to become proficient enoughtto take the two shots I've taken, so far. Maybe that isn't enough????
I have total confidence that I will hit where I'm aiming. Admittedly.....ADMITTEDLY I have put the pin a little high on both animals I shot, this week. The next shot I take will be lower. I hope I have the same outcome (Hit where I'm aiming). If I have a cause to be hard on myself (one of a few).....this one tops the list. As far as my actions after each encounter.....I will sleep "OK".
These animals deserve our absolute best effort. I let 2 of themdown, this week, I fear. THAT I will have to live with.
I'll be back on that "horse", soon, KP. Thanks...and I didn't take your post in the wrong way. It was spot-on.
To everyone else.....good luck.....and give 'em your best effort.
Edited:
If Rob/PA doesn't mind the calls.....I would encourage every member here to use him as a resource. I do it EVERY time I have an encounter.....and even those not resulting in a shot being loosed.
I didn't think I hit it, Bob.....due to the animal's reaction. She seemingly left the scene, unscathed. Yes....she left "normally".....like she'd reacted to a "sound". I heard no bone.....and I found no hair at the "scene"....and minute portions on the arrow. Minute.

I've wounded a few deer. I'll admit it. It sucks. you feel bad. These feelings pass. It's all a learning curve(and you never stop learning) Don't worry about the deer, I hope "you'll be fine".

Please don't take this the wrong way but....don't be so damn dramatic ~ geez! Especially your wifes comment about, I know this stuff happens but never thought it would happen to you...its not like your identity was stolen...the deer jumped the string and got grazed.
You took a 25 yrd shot, aimed a tad high and the deer may have dropped a little. You practice and take hunting seriously...what else can you do?
Just remember the words of the late Forest Gump, "**** Happens".

Jeff I know it sucks but stay at it pal.
My 1/2 cent worth are 2 things that stick out to me.
You aimed a bit high, IMO stick right on the heart at all times. If you think its a bit farther out use the 30 yard pin and stay on the heart (keeps focus at task at hand). Like you stated deer will dunk. 2nd thing 23' , bring it down a bit.
Not being negative or anything pal just trying to add my thoughts and you can process everyones advice and go with what you think will work.
Good Luck and I do feel for ya pal.
