Sorry about your deer I know the feeling well. I shot a nice buck that had been shot early in the season and was a mess . You could actually smell it as you got close . I have shot some that have healed and they were fine ,but you never know with an open wound .

TWACK: Think about it..... How in the world does your butcher test all your meat? He doesn't. He doesn't have the equipment. Smell, look and feel will tell you NOTHING really. A deadly bacteria is unseen, offers no smell or special quality except to a Lab Rat. If he tells you he checks it... he's smokin ya.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I forget the name of it. Some of these nature gurus on here can help. I'm not sure if it is "Blacktongue" or appears like black tongue. Anyway, they hemorage through their nose, their hoofs split and peel back or off. They get in such pain they end up dragging themselves around on their bellies. Most who come down with it die. A few survive. It'll really whack a local herd in a big way. I think it's primarily a Southern disease. It hit an area in Georgia I lived in one year. The deer I shot had survived but was in deplorable condition. You could literally have played a tune on his ribs and spine. You could grab his hide and pull hand fulls of hair out with no effort. Nice horns... but one ugly deer.

RE: Questionable Meat from the doe
David, thanks for the info. My brother felt sorry for me(no luck in GA this year) and gave me his spike(GA). It looked like the deer had stepped in acid and the bottom half inch of hoof looked as if it was eaten a way and cracked. The deer did seem to be healthy. I was there when my brother field dressed the deer, but I can't say that I noticed the deers tongue. Anyone else out there have thoughts on this deer? Thanks, Deb
