I don't think it is the fake apples that attract the deer, it is the apple scent. I would be willing to bet that if you just put the scent up so it could disperse and threw some on the ground, that they would spend just as much time checking it out.

Just as an Update...I was reading my PennsylvanniaGame Lawslastnight.
At least in PAthe use of artificial bait (fake apples, fakecorn, etc)is illeagle and is considered baiting!

LOL some of these responses are great, i got this idea from some pretty famous guy who has a tv show in NY, i met him at a deer hunting show, he seemed a bit crasy...besides fake apples, he also said he takes a does tail, ties a rope around it, and puts the other end on his shoe, and lifts his foot up and down in his tree stand, to try and make it look likea does behind the tree
