HOMEMADE MINERAL MIX RECIPE
Ingredients: Makes 200 lbs. for about $23.00
1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $11.00 you need one bag.
2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loose kind without the medications.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $5.00 you need two bags.
1 part Stock salt, ice cream salt.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $2.00 you need one bag.
Directions:
-Use a 3 pound or similar size coffee can to use as your measure for each part of the mix.
-Mix all together well but not until ready to use, keep ingredients separate until ready to put to use.
-Dig or tear up a circle in the soil about 36 inches wide and about 6 inches deep.
-Mix your mineral mixture with the soil.
Can you use Solar Salt(softener salt)? I can't find Stock salt or I think its supposed to be Rock salt anywhere around here!

I wouldn't use a salt softener. Thats sodium chloride. Go to your local co-op and ask for some sodium bicarbonate. It is an additive for feed. It is actuallybaking soda.
As for the di-calcium phosphate, that may be hard to find too. I just ordered mono calcium phosphate.
Good Luck, I just put mine out today.

Just regular old stock salt works fine for the mix, it is readily available and cheap.
Di-cal is somewhat harder to find, it is a feed additive also, common in dairy cow applications.
I have been using this mix for a couple of years and I love it. The deer do too. The calcium is good for both antler growth and milk production, the phosphorus is also a key component in bone (antler), and the trace mineral should take care of any oddball mineral deficiencies. It is best to use this stuff in spring/summer when they really need it instead of just hunting season. I actually have mine in a mineral feeder, and at certain times of year they will flat wear it out.

Yes, I make my own using that, except I use sodium bicarb instead of rock salt.....
It works very well. Our licks are pretty much mud holes in the spring and summer. They don't mess with them much at all in the fall and winter though.
