These are just strategies by Alsheimer (not full proof), so takewhat he saysasa grain of salt. They arejust ideas so changethem to make them your own and tailor them to your own style of how you like to hunt (he does know what he's talking about though).

Hunting the Pre Rut:

-Hunt the food sources, studies have been done and show bucks will gain weightup to 25% during August and September. Why do bucks put on some much weight during this time of the year, because, once the rutting moon comes, food is no longer on the mind.

Also you can try tickling antlers together to simulate bucks interest in sparing this time of year (no aggressive rattling). A Short grunt may stop walking bucks in the woods, if he seems interested a couple more short grunts may drawhim closer in to see what the fuss is about.

Evening timesseem topaymore dividends than morning hunts becausedeer have been beaded down all dayfrom the heat and are eager to get outinfeed as it gets cooler in the evening hours.

Hunting the Rutting Moon:

Whitetails range can bee broken into three zones:

1. Feeding
2. Bedding
3. The area in between (or transition zone)

#3 is where you want to hunt now, because:

-mature bucks will not focus on feeding areas during day light hours
-ifmature bucks are at a feeding area, they are going to be around the does and if one spooks, can you sayBYEBYE to everyone.
-with several deer in a feeding area, you have that manymore eyesto watch and that many more watching watching out for you.
-you can't disturb the bedding area unless you want to change deer patterns they already have established.
-the transition zone is where the most rutting sign will be found and where a buck is probably the most vulnerable.

Use a grunt tube and a set of rattling antlers to lure deer closer to you. Use a bleat call, when times are slow, as a locator call. Rubs, scrapes, decoysand lures... take advantage of them. Alsheimersays thebesttime to rattle is about a weekbefore the rutting moon until the third phase of the moon, which is seven days, which is seven days after the full moon. The seven days that follow the rutting moon are the best time during the period.
