Default Trajectory of Arrow 20 pin @ 25 yds

Hey guys,

I typically shoot on our archery range right at the spots that are a measured distance. So the other day I decided to see what would happen at the mid-points. I was shocked. Very shocked. Here is what I'm shooting

Mathews FX 28" Draw 62lbs
Arrow: CX 350 with 100gr tip

At 25 yards using my 20 yard pin I had 6" of drop. I couldn't believe it. So if a deer was at 25 yards and I used my 30 yard pin I might spine it and if I use my 20 yard pin I might miss low!

I'm only looking for those of you that will actually go outside and shoot your bows and measure.

How many inches does your bow drop when shooting at 25 yards with your 20 yard pin?

Thanks

Tom

I think you are doing the right thing by experimenting with your own rig.

That seems pretty steep to me. I might be 1-2 inches off thats about it.
I am curious if this is in the tec forum what answers you might get?

Yep. I agree with Bobco. I could tell you what my rig does, but unless you're shooting a 440 grain arrow at 65 lbs draw with a Bear TRX with a 32" draw module, draw length tweaked to 32 1/2" for a 25 1/2" power stroke, it would be meaningless. Too much difference with the equipment.

What counts is you becoming intimately acquainted with the trajectory you get with your setup, no matter what that trajectory is, and either learn to judge yardage accurately or use a range finder.

Slower bows really give you no margin for error on yardage judging. This is where a speed demon is the difference between a kill and a bad hit (or whiff).

I'm sighted dead nuts at 20 (maybe a half-inch hot), and I have maybe 5" of drop at 35 yards. Then again, I am breaking allthe rules when it comes to speed.

Just from playing around with one pin, my trajectory looks like this
20 +.5
25 -.5
30 -2.5
35 -5
40 -8.5

That's with a 200 grain arrow and a 100 grainfield point- 70#, 29" draw, HCA Iron Mace (300 grain total weight). Arrow speed is in the neighborhood of 335-345 fps.
For hunting, I think I've settled on an 85 grain head, so that will flatten it out even more. (285 grain total weight)

I also think that it is pretty steep because my bow is on at 20 yards and it will only drop an inch but that ismy setup yours is different.

Here's a trajectory calculator to check out. Its numbers almost match mine exactly, so I'd say it's pretty accurate.

A lot of you guys who think you're one-pin to 30-35... You're not.

Thanks Quick.

I'd like to get some other folks to measure up. I know it doesn't reflect my equipment but I'd like to know if things are way out of the ordinary. I think they are. When shooting my buddy had another 2" of drop than what I had. So he was around 8" of total drop. Pretty nuts if you ask me.

Yeah, that's pretty steep, but I'm not surprised w/ that set up....You're overspined w/ the 350's, 250's would suit you better I believe......But you've really got 2 things working against you, short DL and Mathews....

I sight my pin for 25 yards.....If I shoot that pin at 20, I am 1" high, and 1" low at 30. But I'm also shooting 320 fps.....I'm only guessing with this, but I would bet you're in the upper 230's to lower 240's....That's a big difference. Kudos for checking things out, now you know you need to use your pin gap for a 25 yard shot.

If you're shooting a slow bow - maybe in the 220's - and you're accidentally 1 yard off on your sight-in (actually zeroed at 19 yards instead of 20). That's not outside the realm of possibility... Then, say you've accidentallyoverestimated your 25-yard peg. Now, you're shootingat a little OVER 25 yards(say 26.5), it could make a pretty big difference.

Just for giggles - I entered 220 fps, 19 yard pin, 26.5 yards - and got a 7.14" drop. Sounds about right.
