If I knew how to weld, had a welder at my disposal, and had lots of scrap metal (that didn't weigh a ton) laying around, then I'd probably build my own as well.

As it is, I'd love to learn how to weld, but the cost of everything to get me started (note I didnt' say proficent) would probably supply me well over a dozen stands of my choosing.

As to making your own harnesses... when I used to repell a lot all we ever used was our own hand tied Swiss Seats. Long as you tie it right, no problem. Not exactly comfortable though.... I'll stick with my vest!

I'd love to make my own stuff however, I don't have enough gumption to build it, carry it into the woods and lug it up the tree anymore [gettin old]. The stuff now is not too expensive and very light by comparison. I think it is neat that you can make your own stuff though.

I made my own stands the first 4 or so years I hunted. It just wasn't worth the time and effort.

All it takes is one fall and your hunting career may be over with.

I just don't have all the needed equipment to make it work - welder, scrap metal, etc.

Lately what's been working pretty good for me is to head to the sporting goods stores either late in the season or just after the season has ended and make them an offer for 3 or 4 stands...

I have a welder and love to weld but I can not find the time to make one. I made a design and just have not had the time to build it yet. I like hunting from the ground most of the time anyway.

I went 12 years of archery hunting before I bought a stand made by anyone other than me. I got a good deal on 2 stands last year and I couldn't pass it up. I make some very heavy duty stands with a good sized platform for comfort, usually does take 2 guys to hang 'em

SouthDakotaHunter - Nice to see another South Dakota guy around here!
